Rudy's has several convenient locations in Seattle in Capitol Hill, U District, and Phinney Ridge. They offer quick haircuts....no frills but good haircuts at a very reasonable price. They also provide great buzzcuts. Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait, but usually it's not too long, especially if you can avoid busy times, such as Saturday.

I regularly got my hair cut at Scream when I lived in on Capitol Hill. Scream fits the Hill perfectly, with alt music playing and stylists with tattoos and punked out hair styles. But they know their stuff. I received great haircuts and candid advice on how I should wear it, at a great price from some cool stylists. They also have a lot of haircare products too at reasonable prices. They also offer hair dying but I was never that adventuresome!

I've only gotten a few manicures, but the best place I've been to was Broadway Nails on Broadway in Capitol Hill. This was my first experience getting a manicure, and they made me feel perfectly comfortable (as a guy I was a little uncomfortable when first walking in). The manicurist washed my hands and fingers, gave them a brief massage, and then went to work grooming them. I was completely relaxed the whole time, thanks to her amazing hands. And the cost was right on target, around $12 I believe. They also do pedicures, which for relaxing my feet after a long day of walking around Seattle, would be great!

I had my hair cut several times at Patrick Bear salon. I chose based on the convenient location in Capitol Hill as well reviews I had read, plus it didn't hurt that it was gay-owned and operated. My stylist Rodney provided excellent service, listening to my preferences and adding his own expert advice. Plus he's a great conversationalist and made the time fly by, while giving me a great haircut! While more expensive than a barbershop, the cut was worth it.

My partner and I stumbled across Market Spice while we were exploring downtown Seattle. What a great shop! They have excellent spice blends, especially for seafood and southwestern style foods. I especially liked their different types of salt. We bought some Hawaiian sea salt, which has a beautiful red color and a complex flavor that lingers pleasantly on the palate. The only downside was that they were out of the cocoa blend (which smelled great in the sample jar!). I'll have to go back and see if they have it in stock soon and pick up some other spice blends and types of salt!

Twice Sold Sales is a neat little independent bookstore that mostly sells used books. Great selection and prices of used titles, and there are several cats lounging about the store. Very cool! The store is open late and I believe all night on Friday nights, providing a nice alternative to bars/clubs. I've stumbled across used copies of books that I couldn't wait to get home to read. Professional, courteous, and helpful staff work there, and if you have any questions, they're more than willing to provide assistance.

When I first went into Powell's, I was blown away. A friend suggested we split up and meet back in a couple of hours....which was not nearly long enough! I've never seen so many categories of books and such a large selection with each. Powell's carries new and used books inall sorts of categories, and you can also find many out of print, signed, and first/early editions of books. Their branch at the Portland airport, while small, is also great!

As an employee of UW, I venture across campus from time to time and check out the bookstore. They have a large fiction section, and while the prices aren't anything special, the selection is nice. There are usually bargain tables out as well, although with these books, the selection usually isn't too impressive. Still, it's a great bookstore to while away some time. If you're driving, be prepared to deal with the limited parking in the U-district. There is a pay parking lot in back.
