Wow, this probably isn't what you want to hear, but.... One of the reasons your hair look so amazing when you leave the stylist is because of the hairdryers they use. Thy typically use negative ion dryers, start with high heat to get your hair to submit and finish it with COLD air to make it shiny and "set" it. When i asked my stylist what to get, he didn't hesitate to say an Elchim Dryer (made in Germany), one with negative ion capabilities and a cold switch. So that's what i got. You have to google where to find them near you, but they are so worth it. I have had mine for 3 years now, and my hair looks gorgeous no matter what color / style it is at the time - and i put my hair through hell, so i at least want to give it the best hair dryer. Cost? Mine was $120. But I love it so much that i gleefully coughed that up again after my daughter dropped my first one in the toilet. ANd for the record, I'm cheap too. But when it's worth it, I'll gladly spend the money. And this is worth it.

If you have a Sonicare toothbrush, chances are good you've at least wondered what would happen if you could use it on your face. I know several people - myself included - who actually tried it.... just to see. Well, the good news is that the original designer of the Sonicare Toothbrush actually went out and created a face brush that works in the same way. http://www.clarisonic.com/ The Clarisonic face brush is pretty magical. When I first started using it i could immediately see a difference in my pores - they were smaller, fewer black-heads etc... But it was also much smoother and softer, less dry than it had been with other cleansers and cleaning systems. It also feels really nice. There is - just like the toothbrush - a built in timer that tells you how long to spend on each region of your face - and the whole time feels like a mini-massage.... It's really great. I believe they use them at the downtown Nordstrom spa, if you want a test drive. If, on the other hand, you just want to buy it, you can do so online, http://www.clarisonic.com/.

There are a lot of GREAT bike shops in Seattle, as this as a GREAT bike town. But my husband - who is a bike commuter, and builds some of his own bikes - always turns to Ti Cycles in the U District when he needs precision repairs or guidance on something he's building.
That said, other great shops are Montlake Cycle, Recycled Cycles, the little bike shop in Leschi.

I haven't been yet, but many who have - including food critics in town - are raving about Kallaloo in Columbia City. It was opened by a trained and experienced chef who is marreid to a woman from the Caribbean and brings her native influence and family recipes to the place. It's supposed to be great. It's in Columbia City, which is pretty easy to get to from anywhere - just head south on Rainier Avenue until you get there....

Although I am an unabashed supporter of my beloved South End - Seward Park, Cabaret, Tutta Bella, La Medusa - last night was the first time that we went out as a family and did the Columbia City Beat Walk. I nearly cried with the incredible neighborhood energy and pride. $5 gets you into nearly a dozen venues, each of which has live music of all sorts, and great browsing through galleries, book stores, pubs and great funky little boutiques. Columbia City is really coming into it's own. As a resident and general fan of the neighborhood, even I was surprised and thrilled to see all the other "young" families with little kids, all of whom were wonderfully friendly and chatty. No sign of the Seattle Freeze here! But there were people of all ages there, and even a fairly large set of clearly single folks doing the "night out with the girls" thing. Although we ended up going home early - using our 8 year-old as the excuse - it was clear that the bars stay open late, cabaret was happening, the fabulous Ethiopian restaurant was jamming 'til the wee hours.... It was great. I highly recommend that anyone wanting to shake up their scene a little bit try to find your way down to this gem of a neighborhood on the First Friday of every month and get into the Beat of the Columbia City Beat Walk!

I'm torn between really wanting to support a great local theater with a great show, and not wanting anyone else to find out about so that I don't have to be one of the poor people stuck with Standing Room Only up in the top balcony. But the spirit of sharing and supporting wins out, and I have to encourage everyone to go catch a twirling tease at the Columbia City Theater. Friday nights are a fabulous Burlesque show -complete with old-style strip-tease, highly styled with twirling tassles. It's truly Vaudeville in that it is a variety show, and you never know what you'll get. But whatever it is - strip-tease, drag queens, tap dancing, banjos, magic, who knows - you'll LOVE the intimate setting, the great cocktail service, and the personal panache of true performers just doing whatever it is they do best. You can even order dinner from Tutta Bella (which, with the best pizza in Seattle, is right next door.) If you haven't yet made it down to Columbia City for the great restaurants, cute shops and award-winning farmer's market, let this be your excuse. You'll be back - to Columbia City, and to the Cabaret!

We've been going to St. Clouds for 4 years now, on a regular basis. It's not fancy or fluffy, or all that trendy, but it is dearly beloved by all who know it for its great food and even better atmosphere. We discovered it after we had our LAST far-too-kid-friendly meal at the Madrona Ale House across the street. We were looking for a good place to eat out with our daughter that didn't feel like Romper Room. The food and service at St. Clouds are both excellent. (Buckets of quiet toys for to play with.) While not the trendy Haute Cuisine of other Seattle hot spots, the food is more like what you'd get if you were lucky enough to have a fabulous and innovative cook in your family. And the service is the same way - attentive, but not fussy, friendly, but not overbearing. There is no place we would rather eat, ever. And as much as we love dinner there, breakfast is even better. But whenever you go, don't miss the ice-cream with homemade fudge sauce. (Yes, it's a perfectly suitable breakfast.) A tad pricey sometimes, but worth it. And although the basics stay the same, the menu changes often enough that you don't get bored.
NOTE - the map here in JB is wrong! St. Clouds is in the main commercial strip of the Madrona neighborhood.

How often have you been tired at the end of the day (or bored in the middle of it) and wished someone would just magically prepare you a home-cooked plate of comfort food and serve it to you with all the love that your mom did when you were a kid - no need to be on your best behavior, or perfectly groomed? Well, then you need to head on down to Geraldine's Counter in Columbia City. Though I don't think anyone named Geraldine has prepared a meal there, it sure tastes like someone's heart and soul went into the creation of these comfort food classics. Mac and Cheese, BLT's with Arugula instead of lettuce, sweet-potato fries, fabulous salads, GREAT fish-n-chips. Because we live in the 'hood, we're down there all the time for lunch and dinner. It always fits the bill when we want "cheap, easy, yummy and healthy." No pre-made stuff that's been nuked before it's served to you - all real ingredients prepared by real people. It's casual, but chic. Lively, but not overrun. Kid-friendly, but not romper room. A great menu that is short and to the point, but still has enough variety to please absolutely anyone. It is, for sure, our favorite family joint - and as close as I have found to a yummy home cooked meal served to me like my mother would have, if my moth |
