When you've had your fill of fancy (and often overpriced) breakfast food, head over to the Varsity Inn. Typical diner-type breakfast fare with generous portions and a friendly staff. One of a handful of places that actually serves shredded hash browns and during the week you can't really beat their $4.95 breakfast special (sausage, eggs, toast and hashbrowns!).

Did I mention that you must try to the ginger biscuits? And if you're lucky, you'll arrive right when they are pulled from the oven. Cafe Besalu has been a favorite for us since the day it opened and judging from the throngs of people there every weekend, we're not the only ones. Don't be discouraged by a wait, it's worth it. Pain au chocolat, ginger biscuits, checkerboard cookies, quiche ... everything is excellent. The place has a small cozy feel with James just behind the case seemingly effortlessly preparing the next batch of goodies.
It's not just the pastries though, they pour an excellent coffee as well!

Reasonable prices and the best dill pickle soup!
My family has been eating at this restaurant for years and years (so much so that my mom still calls it the Workman's Cafe). It beats out Zosia's(sp?) and Under The Eagle easily.

For the brave, traditional dishes like czarnina (duck blood soup). I usually stick to potato pancakes (which can be a little greasy) that are typically crunchy on the outside and soft and tasty on the inside. The dill pickle soup is made on most days and should not be missed! It's always served with russian rye bread that tastes like it came straight from The New Palace Bakery across the street.
Say hello to the polish ladies rolling out pierogies on your way to the bathroom!

Bubba is a regular fixture in the weekend (though I hear she takes weekends off) and the staff are clearly true animal lovers. Although some of the items they carry a little pricier than a big chain, you can't beat the friendly faces, knowledgeable staff and supporting a great shop.

We started out with Dr. Lamb by chance at Lien Animal Clinic in West Seattle. The clinic has a great staff but we came to realize that Dr. Lamb just had a way with our dogs (and with us!). We were ecstatic when we she opened her own clinic right in Ballard.
There are now 2 vets at the clinic, but I would still recommend asking for Dr. Lamb. She's friendly, personable and explains things in an honest and clear manner (rather than trying to sell services). Most importantly, she has such a way with animals. We have 2 dogs who can be frightened and grumpy with other vets. When Dr. Lamb comes in the room, they both turn into pussycats! Without complaint they'll endure exams, shots, you name it.
I would and have recommended her to friends!

The thing I miss most in the Detroit area is definitely La Shish, and not just any location ... the headquarters off Michigan Ave. in downtown Dearborn. The hummous is divinely creamy, the pita warm, soft and straight from the oven, fattoush and chicken shawarma always perfect! Don't forget an icy lemonade which goes perfectly with the meals. The best meal you'll have at such reasonable prices.

I love Netflix, but I also like to balance it with a visit to our local video/dvd store. Rain City Video on the corner of Market and 8th is quite small (if you blink, you might miss it jammed next to the Texaco) and yet it manages to have a remarkably diverse and deep selection of movies in all genres. You can still find movies like Female Trouble alongside Harry Potter here. Okay, maybe not right alongside but you get my meaning.
The bonus of Rain City is that they carry many of the same movies as Scarecrow Video without the credit card deposits. People in the know will tell you that because it's not as popular as Scarecrow (the Seattle film buff's paradise) they actually HAVE the movies you're looking for.
Lastly, the staff is friendly and helpful in recommending new flicks. If you're a horror film fan, check with Tom for the latest releases and old school must sees.
