There's just something about losing yourself inside Elliott Bay's creaky, wood lined interior when it's rainy outside. They carry an in-depth selection of books in all genres and are happy to order anything you don't find. Though, the real gem of this store is its staff. The people here are true book lovers and can offer up a suggestion with even the minimum idea of what you might want. Make sure to check out the staff reviews throughout the store ... over the years I've come to rely on them.

Caribou Coffee sits in a prime people-watching spot on the corner of 4th and Main in downtown Royal Oak. What used to be the Coffee Exchange years ago is now a wood planked, moose decorated, cabin-like cafe. The drip coffee is decent, however the espresso drinks are pretty generic. My americano tasted horrible and the latte was more like a cafe au lait.
That said, if you're not looking for more than a cup of joe and a spot to sit and relax than this definitely fits the bill.

Caffe Fiore and their awesome staff pour beautiful shots layered with creamy crema and lattes with not a milk bubble in sight. What I love about Fiore is that they don't feel the need for rushing people in and out. They aren't slow, but at the same time they like to take the time to catch up with their customers and pour delicious coffee.
It's nice that they have decided to forego wi-fi in the Ballard location in favor of neighborhood conversation at the common table.
If they had a little more seating, it would be perfect.

We live in Shoreline and it certainly would be more convenient to have a doctor closer to home. Why don't we switch? Because Seth is easily the best doctor we've ever had. In the current state of healthcare where you're swept in and out of visits ... he's never rushed (and I know he's busy) and always has a friendly word, has on many occasions squeezed us in when I know his day should be done and has always provided excellent care. He's at Mercer Island Medical Clinic and if you're looking for a new doc, he's a great bet.

Lucca statuary combines a love of all things French with a love for fine writing papers and instruments. Although they carry a surprising variety of accessories (everything from ribbons to uniquely French baby items to handbags to soaps and candles), I find myself always gravitating towards the back room which houses fine stationary papers, moleskines (of course!) writing instruments and everything else you need to kill e-mail forever.
The store is beautifully dressed with black walls, crystal chandeliers and antique display cases. This is a great store for unique gift items that you won't necessarily find elsewhere. Happy browsing!

I've never been to Paris ... but I imagine it being chock full of little boutiques like Lucca. I know, I'm naive. With black walls, glittering chandeliers (all for sale) and black-framed butterfly shadowboxes on the wall, it's had to believe you're in Ballard.
They carry a fine selection of indulgences from the very small (french stationary, notecards and novelties) to the truly luxurious (Santa Maria Novella beauty products, distinct and hand chosen handbags). They also a regular stocker of select Chronicle books and the indispensible Moleskine.
Each item seems a carefully selected treasure and I find that no matter what my budget is, I manage to walk out with something special.

The surroundings are perfect for a Sex and the City type girl-fest, however I found the staff to be a bit icy. My manicure also was poorly done and lasted scarcely a couple of days (and my work is easy on the hands). It may be that it was just a bad day there. The flowery couches and colors do feel relaxed and they seemed to have a good selection of cosmetics and other beauty products.

My husband, family and many friends have been going to see Dr. Mark Balter at Northwest Vision Clinic in Ballard for years now. His staff is friendly and Dr. Balter is very thorough and professional!
The only downside is their selection of glasses (if you're looking for those). However, in the past I've always just gotten my exams here and bought frames at Seattle EyeMDs downtown.

Fresh, quick and delicious Greek food
Although I've lived in Seattle for going on 10 years now, I still miss the culinary cultural makeup of what I left. Detroit's downtown nightlife (believe me, there is one) is centered around an area...
