Alex and I used to snicker at Charlie Hong Kong whenever we went by. My gosh, how much more could you poke fun of Asian people in this town! But then we had a friend come to Santa Cruz who had heard about it and wanted to try it out. So off we went.
Despite the name, CHK has pretty good food. Vietnamese fusion, or something like that, CHK uses organic and fresh ingredients. The food has great flavor, although it can get overwhelming towards the end.
They have a tiny parking lot, and you may end up driving around in search of a spot. Also, it can get busy so seating can be an issue as well.

I was reading a post on JB about Cafe Besalu and decided that I had to try it. Oh my gosh, boy was the food there good!
On a Sunday morning, Alex and I dragged our doggies for a brisk walk to the Cafe. After devouring our quiches and croissants, I was glad that we had to burn some calories walking back. There is no dearth of butter in the food here!
I still need to go back a few more times; there were just too many interesting treats for me to try in one sitting. From ginger biscuits to chocolate croissants, the offerings at Cafe Besalu makes my mouth water.
In typical man style, Alex complained about how much more food he could have gotten at a cruddy diner. However, it is very interesting to note that he went back on his own the following weekend while I was at a wedding the in Bay Area. Hmmmm...

Alex and I usually ended up at Pluto's whenever we wanted something "healthy" to eat, and were not in the mood to fix it ourselves. For a pretty low price, you get these HUGE salads that more than fill your belly. You get to pick your own toppings, and watch them get tossed together in front of you. If you're looking for a little splurge, ask for some tri-tip on top of your salad. And if you want to throw the whole I'll eat healthy thing out the door, try their garlic fries--oh so good!

So things may changed since I was there a few years ago. Actually, I'm hoping they have. Alex and I stumbled into Pink Godzilla by mistake and absolutely loved it. Jeez, macadamia nuts in the sushi. What more could we ask for! And the prices were so reasonable, too. However, service started getting really poor, and we would wait and wait and wait for our food to arrive. It turned out it was one bad waitress, but we kept on getting her! And it was so annoying to see people coming in much later than us getting served first. Everyone else there was fantastic, and we would plot to avoid her. So beware, the potential is there for a great chill night out. As long as you don't get the wrong person.

Mama's is another good breakfast spot in San Francisco. Unfortunately, it can get a bit touristy inside, and the lines can stretch halfway down the street. It's a little more chic than most places I like to go to. As a tip, stick to the omelets. The pancakes, etc. just don't hit the spot as well. I also heard the Monte Crisco was pretty good, but also very bad for you.

I've been conflicted about this for a while. Yes, you can get all you can eat crab legs at Todai's, and each meal comes with a tiny lobster tail. However, is it really worth the cash that you have to shell out to get in the door. I mean, how many crab legs do you have to eat? Besides that, there is not much there to pull me. Granted there's lots of sushi, but they're okay... And I do like the dessert bar--I mean the mini creme broulee are too cute. But, is it worth it?
On the plus side, I think you get your meal on the house on your birthday. But be prepared to show some ID.

Alex and I have been hankering for some good Mexican food, or Mexican like food for a while. I haven't screwed up the courage to go to the Taco Trucks yet, even though a lot of people--JB community included--have said it's a safe bet. Back to the point, I think Alex and I found our go to place at the Chile Pepper. We dropped in one day when we were daunted by the line at Musashi's. It was a pretty solid find. I can't really describe the food because I was so darn tired that day, but I do know that Alex took their card. Always a good sign. And yes, for those of you who read my Gordito's post, there was no marinara like wanna be salsa around.

Ray's Boathouse--the seafood isn't the only good thing on the menu

With my visiting sister, and her family in tow, Alex and I went to Ray's Boathouse last weekend. From the free valet parking to the crayons to entertain the kids, Ray's Boathouse provides the service needed for a relaxing meal. I know, it seems stupid to go to a seafood restaurant and not order seafood, but the portabello sandwich with sweet potato fries were too tempting to pass up. And while everyone got on my case, they couldn't stop snatching my fries when I was not looking. Also, try the spinach salad as a starter--the dressing is to die for.

I should know better. Really I should. But we were hungry, and I kept seeing crowds out front. So, Alex and I threw caution to the winds and went to Claim Jumpers. The place is busy, so I imagine that people like food. Darn it, I even liked our meal. Baby back ribs, mashed potatoes, and toast. That is until I started looking around me. Grease galore. Everything deep fried. Even the salads looked unhealthy.
But those desserts sure do look good. So conflicted. Bottom line, come here if you're ready to splurge and dump the diet out the door.
