john fleming from r-b-f was our architect and he did such a good job that our kitchen made it into Northwest Homes & Gardens Magazine! he has a truly uncanny ability to figure out exactly what you are looking for and be able to put it on paper.
our house is a 1908 craftsman and, among other things, we wanted to remodel the kitchen. he made sure that the kitchen looked updated but still maintained good "flow" from the older parts of the house. and the outside is flawless - you'd never be able to tell that there's a 'newer' part of the house. he's also strong with recommending materials, fixtures, etc.
one more thing of note - his office somehow got all of our permits in hours instead of weeks - they know what they are doing, know who to contact, etc. amazing.

hubby and i have now bought 2 subarus through carlos at carter subaru up on aurora. if you ever want a subaru, go to them and ask for him. he's been good to us each time, not a high-pressure salesperson, honest, nice, etc. and they DON'T give out your name to mailing lists, marketing companies, etc.

great place to take your car if you never want to see it again. our prius was rear-ended - badly - and werner's said they'd have it fixed in 3 weeks. it was more like 4 months, was never properly fixed, SHOULD never have been fixed (should have been totalled but i guess they wanted the $$) and we were constantly lied to. they'd call us and say that the car would be ready in a few hours so we'd drop off our rental and go by the shop, only to find out that 'something' went wrong and we wouldn't see our car again for weeks. then they'd drop off our 'fixed' car, but we'd have to bring it back within hours because of major issues that were very obviously still wrong.
not worth the headache.

fast, honest, fair AND nice. they recently told my friend that her car was fixed and charged very little because they didn't have to do much. her car had problems the next day so she went back and they discovered a bigger problem they missed the first time. they fixed it at no charge because "they already sent her home with a fixed car so why should she have to pay again?"!!

we've had several experiences with the marqueen garage and all of them have been surprisingly positive. they seem to be able to repair/tune up any sort of car (but i don't think they do body work) and do it quickly. and these people do NOT rip you off. my friend had a broken timing belt and they told her that the belt may have caused valves to blow, that they'd check into it. the next day they called and said "you're in luck, it was just the belt!" and that was it, car was ready.
and they are perfectly nice to deal with, too. located at the top of queen anne next to 5 spot.

jon grus at university vw is THE man. my good friend was going to buy a tourareg (sp?) when they first came out and jon actually talked her out of buying that and getting a less expensive, better-tested and reliable jetta instead! have you ever heard of that from a car salesman? me neither.
i test drove a car with him and he was great. nice, no pressure, good communicator, etc. i'd go back to him in a sec. i didn't buy the car from him (went with a subaru outback) and he was very cool when i told him.

long story short - jilly's hubby wants to get prius. jilly sends hubby to burien toyota. expected waitlist of several months turns into several weeks. jilly's hubby is given a very fair price on his trade-in. jilly's hubby now has a cool new Prius.
our salesman, matt beck, was fun to work with even though his 12 minutes really was 30 minutes, but that's another story. super low pressure, great comm, nice people to work with, easy to get to. if i ever get a toyota or scion, i know where i'm going.

let me start by saying that i hated driving a minivan. hated getting one, hated driving an automatic, hated being the "minivan driver". i got rid of my mpv after 9 months. that said, i really liked the mazda mpv - as far as minivans go.
i owned the 2004 luxury model - all leather seats, dvd player, etc. i thought it was an adorable little car, and got a few compliments from strangers who asked if it was a minivan or an suv and told me that they'd never seen a mini that they liked before.
you can NOT beat mazda performance. period. it is an amazingly reliable vehicle. i liked working with john from university mazda - NO-pressure sale. he didn't even go with me on the test drive.
the set-up on the body of the car was nice but i would have liked a 60/40 rear fold-down, and *really* wished it had heated seats. the automatic sliding side doors were a dream, the dvd player saved me from lots of headaches on some trafficy days, and it had some great nooks & crannies in the driver console. the way-back seat could flip completely into the floor, AND it could flip out so that you could tailgate with the rear hatch open and protecting you.
the car had good pep - didn't feel sluggish like some vans that i test drove.
i just hated driving a minivan and really longed for my stick shift. but if i was forced to get another mini, i'd get an mpv again in a second.

i like to shop at communique. for such a smallish store they have a nice selection, and they have a few train tables set up near the entrance to keep the little dudes busy while we shop. it's set up well and easy to find what you are looking for. and their gift-wrapping is fabulous! i swear they have turned making ribbon bunches into an art form.
but their prices are steep - you can find a lot of the same stuff at top ten toys for less. and the sales help are usually not much help. i've had to pull a salesperson away from a game of computer solitaire for help more than once. they hardly ever offer to help you, but when you do ask for help, they know their stuff.

morfey's cake shoppe is the only place i'll get a cake. i've used them for everything from a baby shower for a very elegant, rich, powerful, etc. woman to a 3-year old's birthday party and the one thing that's been steady? never a leftover piece!
they are nice to work with but more important is that their cakes are beautiful and delicious. and very fairly priced, too. if you call and make an appointment you can go in for a tasting, browse the shop, etc.
now i'm hungry :-)
