I like Lien because they are a small clinic, and really understand just how important pets are to people. When I brought in my housecat, who is pretty darn far, instead of getting scolded the vet acknowledged that some house cats just do get fat and it wasn't a big deal. That's not to say they don't take real medical problems seriously, just that they have a realistic view of things. Once when I had to have a pet put down, they sent a personalized card signed by the staff. It is the attention to small details, like the correct spelling of your pets name on records, that really sets them apart.

Y'know the Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons? This is his shop. It is heavy on the Marvel/Figurine bent that I'm not really into, but I go for the small alternative comics collection, and the large bins of cool movie posters. I got a great one from "The Blob" there once. They also sell actual screenplays, and black and white star glossies. Golden Age Collectibles is not a destination, but if you are wandering about the Pike Place Market and like comics, you should make a point to stop in . . . they do have a lot of stuff.

I picture the proprieter of the Admiralty House, a maritime "filled to the gills" looking antique junk shop, as a grizzled old proprietor with a old pipe and a glass eye, who gets up most mornings and cackles, "ach . . . work who needs it?" and decides to flip back over for a much needed nap. So his cool looking, seaworthy items, which look like they were lovingly collected over a long and rich lifetime, regard you balefully through thick panes of glass . . . never will you get in to have that closer look, that small caress, and perhaps that purchase.

After spending a few trips to Sears being ignored or dealing with un-informed sales staff, Wiseman's was a breath of fresh air. Very knowledgeable without a hard sell, Wiseman's reminds you why the classic neighborhood stores are often better. Prices seemed comperable to the other places we checked, and they seemed to believe in "quality over quantity" in their selection . . . ie. they had whittled it down to the products they could actually stand by. They have a good selection of European and hard to find appliances, such as our New Zealand Fisher and Paykel stainless steel drawer dishwasher (which for the record, rocks!)

A long time ago, before there was Alki Bakery wholesale operations and before the car crashed through the front door during a police chase, causing the whole store to be remodeled (the store was closed, so nobody was hurt) I used to work at the Alki Bakery. That was really hard, because they still baked everything there, so I started the morning smelling the cinnamon rolls being baked (cream cheese frosting), which then morphed into the smell of foccaccia pizzas (I don't believe they make these anymore) and finally to the smell of baking bread. I gained a bit of weight working there. I may be biased, but while the Alki Bakery is always a good place to go, particularly for breakfast pastries and dessert, it is not quite what it used to be. In any event, I miss the old smells of yore.

Chuck and Sals . . . aka the furthest possible thing from a "meat market." If you want to have a beer as you are, go have a beer as you are. Friendly Cheryl remembers you after one visit, it has a great juke box, cheap domestic beers ($5.50 a pitcher for Pabst), free pool every Thursday and Sunday. Perhaps the best thing are the regulars; during the holidays you might stumble upon a Christmas or Thanksgiving potluck with the contribution from regulars, and it was even the setting for one regulars wake. It's that kind of place.

So you want to hang out with some friends at a brewpub. You go to the local watering hole, and you are surprised to find out that the food is far more than "pub fare" . . . it is actually good. That's the Elliot Bay Brewery. The microbrews are good too, but the menu is surprisingly comprehensive . . . it is the perfect place to go to please everyone. I am particularly enamored of the Italian club sandwich, I can't quite describe it.
Staff is very friendly, and they are accommodating for groups.

I used to make the long trek out to Ballard just to go to Habitude, and dropped a ton of money there on EVERYTHING. It used to be a good combination of full service salon without the too sleek feel of Gene Juarez, you could get almost any service you needed in a warm, homey atmosphere.
Habitude is still a good place, but I stopped making the trek when I realized how unhappy the hairstylists were. So much so, that a bunch of them started their own salon, Derby. It wasn't that they complained, it's just that their appointments started to get so crammed up that you could feel the rush of the atmosphere. When you are paying that kind of money for salon services, it should be a pampered, relaxing experience . . . and the "new" Habitude feels anything but.
