City People's is a great place to buy flowers and plants for the yard and garden. The outdoor section has a good variety of plants, from roses to trees and shrubs. The greenhouse holds potting plants, and the store itself contains a broad selection of garden tools and knick-knacks. It is a very enjoyable place to shop, with a nice atmosphere and lots of vigorous, healthy plants. I have had better luck with the plants I have bought at City People's thriving and surviving than I have with plants purchased anywhere else. You will pay a bit more for this, but it's better than paying twice to replace a plant that didn't make it.

The Ballard Locks is a public space that has many things to offer. As a park, it is a well kept green space with lush lawns and interesting plantings. Bring a picnic and let your kids burn off some energy rolling or running down the terraced grass that slopes down to the level of the locks. The fish ladder can also be an interesting side trip, especially when the largest fish are making their way back upstream in late summer and early fall. The most important attraction at the Ballard Locks, of course, are the locks themselves - engineering marvels that transport an endless parade of boats to and from the inner lakes to the sound. You'll see some large boats, some small boats, some boats that have difficulty negotiating the procedures in the locks and it all adds up to ever-changing entertainment.

Having a new baby is an adjustment that's impossible to prepare for until it happens. Then, when you're in the middle of it, it can sometimes feel very overwhelming and isolating. That's where PEPS comes in. PEPS is simply a group of new moms who get together with a leader (with their babies in tow) to share stories, support and frustrations. I think the success of a participant's individual experience in PEPS can be largely dependent upon the group they end up in, but it is also a function of the participant's willingness to share and enjoy the experience. It was a great experience for me and I know of many moms who speak of it as a lifesaver at a challenging point in their lives.

The first thing you'll notice at the Alki Homestead Restaurant is that most of the other diners are older than you (unless you're 80 or more). These are the folks who order the various entrees from the menu. Everyone else comes to the Homestead for just one thing - fried chicken.
It's greasy but flavorful, bony and meaty all at the same time. The side orders of mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade biscuits, watery salad, Flav-r-Pac frozen mixed vegetables are adequate but nothing special. Order it family style and they'll keep everything coming until you say stop.
Oh, and there's something both spooky and special about the place itself too. It's in an old log cabin decorated with fringed wall sconces, lace tablecloths, and gilded paintings. It's elegant and at the same time just a bit shabby. It's a fifty year time warp back to the best fried chicken and a gut-busting family style dinner your grandmother only dreamed of.

As a person who has never been into huge, gluttonous brunches I was skeptical of going to Salty's on Alki to try theirs. However, I came away not only pleasantly surprised but amazed at the volume, variety and quality of the food. The seafood alone - fresh shucked oysters, jumbo prawns, crab legs, mussels were worth the 25$ or so price. On top of that, there were made to order omelettes, pasta and belgian waffles, supplemented by a dozen other dishes and close to twenty desserts. The piece de resistance was the chocolate fountain, into which one could dip various fruits, cakes, and other sweets.
The final bonus was a beautiful view over Elliot Bay to the Seattle skyline. Salty's is a great place for locals to brunch but if you're entertaining out of towners it would be spectacular.

Chinooks delivers good quality seafood in a high-energy, bustling setting. The noise level in the restaurant is almost always high, but as long as you don't mind raising your voice a bit to talk to your table mates the hubbub adds a sense of hipness and fun to the atmosphere.
The food is always good, with plenty of variety to satisfy any seafood lover. The seafood caesar salad is enormous and a personal favorite. The monday night all you can eat prawns and chips is a must-do if you can get out on a Monday night.
On weekend evenings get there early or be prepared to wait.

Dick's puts the national fast food chains to shame. Sure, you don't get any special orders, but why do you need them? At Dick's you get a fresh burger cooked on a grill rather than a microwave, real fries that you can watch the guy shove through the cutter and drop into the molten grease, and shakes that start with actual dairy products rather than chemical compounds. And all for a price that's about 2/3 of McD's or BK. Then, you get to eat in your car and entertain yourself watching all types of people stand in line for their Dick's fix. What could be better?

Tired of gloppy refried bean and soggy tortillas at the Mexican chain restaurants? Tacos Guaymas is the real deal, with whole beans, fresh tortillas, a variety of tasty salsas and even good margaritas. You can get a burrito that will keep you full for nearly 24 hours for about $5 and have it filled with your choice of steak, chicken or a variety of less savory meats. For cripes sake, they even have tripe and tongue here, how much more authentic do you want to get?

Cockroaches as Big as the Steaks
