It's a little bit cramped feeling and there's a distinctive sort of musty smell from all the old books, but it's heaven on earth if you love to get lost in the stacks of old, rare and just plain neat books. If a shiny bookstore with a coffee stand is your idea of bookstore heaven, avoid this place. It will have many of the newest books, but an awful lot of its stock was printed before Barnes met Noble. They also offer top dollar for used books.

This store certainly hits a trifecta for me. Where else can you buy used books, find new and back issue comic books, and new and used role playing games? O'Leary's has a huge store for what they sell, so there's never any danger of it being too crowded. Prices on everything are very reasonable, and they even have some of the hard to find stuff. This place is a little out of the way, but it's worth the trip.

King's is a nice, locally owned bookstore that does what bookstores are supposed to do: support readers and writers. In addition to carrying an impressive selection of books, the store hosts readings, author appearances, and special events like their Harry Potter release party and Banned Books Week. Be on the lookout for King's grey cat Harriett.

Glad that there's a good Catholic shop here in Tacoma. This was a little hard for me to find, since it's set back from the street quite a ways. It's back near the Tacoma Goodwill and the Outback, same shopping center.
This is a VERY Orthodox/ultra-conservative Catholic store, so be prepared. I'm a liberal social justice gal, so I just kinda ignored that part. I was there to look for baptism gowns and invitations for my baby. They have a great prayer card selection, and saints medallions, rosaries, etc. I was happy to see the huge selection. And lots of books.

More
Freighthouse Square is the most unique shopping experience I've ever had! The building is shaped like a long, long freight train, and that's the motif the designers went with on the inside. Adorable, unique little shops line both sides of the long, long hallway, with 1800's train decor prominent everywhere. The effect is completely unique, although I suppose that technically it could be called a 'mall' of sorts since it is all indoor shopping.
Most of the little shops are gift shops, although there are a fair number of restaurants as well. In the basement, reached by a long flight of steps, are an antique shop and other areas.
It's entirely possible to spend an entire day just wandering and browsing the shops, especially at Christmas! Much more fun than the regular Mall.

The Crystal Voyage is a wonderful resource for the naturally-minded, including herbs, incense, and all types of reading on topics ranging from dream analysis to folklore to palmistry, tarot, and numerology. It's a store for a specific lifestyle and some people may find it a bit sketchy. If you're going to pay it a visit, just be open to new ideas.

The University of Washington Tacoma book store is a great spot for both students and non-students alike. One half of the store features University of Washington paraphernalia such as sweatshirts, stickers, coffee mugs, school supplies and more. The other half of the bookstore features a wide variety of books - from cookbooks to national best-sellers! The discount tables have some great deals on interesting books. It is conveniently located in the Museum District and next to the campus and many restaurants. It's worth a stop even if you are not a student!

This is fun store to browse. They have secured more inventory than they can organize, so they have lots of books in surprising places. If you can't find what you are looking for they will drop everything and help you look. Sometimes the customers will help you look too! It is a charming community book store whose real goal is to get books in the hands of readers.
They do trades too. Check out their website at:

More
Borders Books has always had a great selection of books, but they also have a music room. The music room has listening stations, with headphones so you can listen to snatches of tracks and determine if the CD you're considering is right for you or not.
Naturally, the book rooms are bewilderingly varied and filled to brimming with books of every description. Every sort of topic you can imagine can be found there, both upstairs and down.
There is even a separate children's section upstairs, with comfy seating that resembles an amphitheater of steps, covered with a moon-and-stars sort of carpeting.
Although I've never actually used it, they also have a small cafe as well. Magazines and newspapers can be found on shelves in this area. Many people sit and read there while having a light snack.
