I got my bike tuned up here and they didn't properly tighten my back wheel and left my brakes out of whack. I ended up falling when trying to climb.
The instore experience was poor too because they left me waiting for over 15 minutes.

I am not a serious biker and wanted to get a decent bike to get started on. A friend pointed me in the direction of Bike Works a non-profit organization that sells bikes to support it's charitable activities of sending bikes abroad.
The staff at bikeworks are very much into bikes and are a lot more knowledgeable than myself about them. They sold me a reconditioned Raleigh for a fair price and it's lasted me four years.
It's not a big place and I don't remember there wasn't much selection. However, they did offer to contact me when something came in that fit my needs.
One thing I really likes was while I was there two neighborhood kids and one adult came in needing some assistance and the staff took care of it right there on the spot. They were very cool about and you could tell the neighborhood kids came in a lot.

I bought a bicycle here a few years ago, and was really impressed by the service, both in purchasing and maintaining the bike. They even include a free tune-up within the first year after you purchase a bike there. The sales people we're knowledgeable and friendly.
The biggest drawback is that they don't have a huge in-stock selection. You may need to (as I did) order your bike and wait a few weeks for it to come in.

Big bicycle stores what to move inventory off their sales floor even if means selling one that doesn't really fit the rider all that well. If you're going to spend a lot of time on your bike it *must* fit correctly. Il Vecchio is a small, custom shop. You'll spend more money but you'll end up with a bike that is made exactly to your unique specifications.

Christian Dardonville is a one of a kind antique restorer and furniture builder. First of all, I called him for an estimate on the repair of an antique my father had given me, and he came the next day! I had had two other bids from other restorers in town, and his was the lowest. Frankly, he did a marvelous job. I was amazed at the way he was able to match the existing color. His repairs are invisible! Last but not least, he has a charming French accent...

I had a custom storage/entertainment center built for my basement--I had a pretty good idea what I wanted, but Wally at Pioneer really helped refine the design and thought of many things I had forgotten. He is extremely detail oriented, and he produced the cabinet exactly according to the original schedule he gave me. Pioneer is right around the corner from me, and I feel lucky to have a quality business like this one in the neighborhood.

I have been running, biking, and driving by Perfect Wheels for over five years and had never gone in. Recently, I purchased a bike from a friend and needed some maintenance done on it before it was rideable and dropped it in to Perfect Wheels on very short notice. The bike was done within a couple days, and is a gem to ride.
While the shop is small, the service is excellent and Larry knows what he's doing. I wouldn't hesitate taking any other bikes to him and his shop for repair.

More
I would like to recommend Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. for repairs and alterations/modifications on outdoor clothing and equipment. I worked there for 14 years and know that they can fix a lot of things that you might otherwise think need to be thrown away.
Does your zipper on your coat/backpack/tent separate open when you try to zip it closed? You might just need a new zipper pull!
Do you want a second door added to your tent? A water bottle pocket added to your pack?
The prices may seem high for alterations and modifications but they are based on what it takes to have all the equipment/tools/supplies and years of expertise to fix or alter your item. Check them out--you can get an estimate up front. They have moved to a new location at 4415 Stone Way North in Wallingford.(They are under Tutta Bella Restaurant.)

More
My neighbor hired Highridge to rebuild their deck, install a hot tub, etc. Not only did they charge top-dollar, but they could not get the job "completed" correctly. They had tremendous down time where the company wasn't sending anyone out to work on their job. It's more than a year past the date of the contracted completion and Highridge is still working on the job, repeatedly needing to redo things that weren't done correctly. This is a company to avoid.
