Tom Lee at TAL consulting is a certified P.E. in Florida (hence the Florida area code) and Washington State (spends time in both places). He came to our house and was clearly competitent in his trade, and seemed reasonably priced. We did not end up using him because the structural redesign was beyond our budget, but we could not have reached that conclsion without his help. He charges $85/hr. $100 for an initial consultation and a minimum of $500 if he ends up doing any work (i.e., writing design specs). Nice guy, too.

I worked with Linda Withington in 2001 to design our yard and garden. It was a great process and I thoroughly enjoyed working with Linda and her staff. We ended up with a unique, artful, year-round garden that I absolutely love and many wonderful outdoor spaces to enjoy. Check out their new website at www.beerswithington.com.

Up front, this shop is NOT fancy and it seems that the employees do not go outside to take their smoke breaks. That said, we had a chair recovered and it looks absolutely fabulous! (You can always buy Fabreeze if need be.) The cost, labor + fabric, was at least 1/2 the price of estimates I received from several other places. The fabric selection is pretty extensive and I felt the work was completed in a timely manner.
I don't know that I would take a family heirloom here, but if you've got something that needs a quick facelift and don't feel like spending an arm and a leg to do it, I recommend these guys.

john fleming from r-b-f was our architect and he did such a good job that our kitchen made it into Northwest Homes & Gardens Magazine! he has a truly uncanny ability to figure out exactly what you are looking for and be able to put it on paper.
our house is a 1908 craftsman and, among other things, we wanted to remodel the kitchen. he made sure that the kitchen looked updated but still maintained good "flow" from the older parts of the house. and the outside is flawless - you'd never be able to tell that there's a 'newer' part of the house. he's also strong with recommending materials, fixtures, etc.
one more thing of note - his office somehow got all of our permits in hours instead of weeks - they know what they are doing, know who to contact, etc. amazing.

Almost all of the frames displayed in our home are from Pottery Barn. Although as a photographer I know how to cut mats and do framing myself, I prefer to buy my frames from Pottery Barn as the quality is so high. The mat colors and textures are varied, and I love their selection. Prices are mid-range, but I feel framing is a worthwhile investment, as they house some of our most precious memories!

I purchased a table and planned to purchase the accompanying set of chairs from HP last summer. However, the deal went sorely awry, things took forever to get delivered, when they were delivered it was the wrong color and they offered no discount for my the mishaps.
My main gripe was lack of communication and speed of delivery. When i ordered the table i was paying a premium because of their mark-up, as soon as I ordered the table and 8 chairs, literally the next day a catalog arrived from the another local patio /garden (City People's) store and the chairs were 50% less, in the same color and they were in stock and available for delivery that week. I called Herban patio and they agreed to meet me on the price, but still wanted me to wait 6 weeks for shipping. I decided not to wait but still ordered the table through them -- no discount. I waited 4 weeks and called to check on the status of my order. I left two messages before I got a call back. They had no idea when the table would be delivered and i should call again. I waited a week, called, called again and finally would get someone. The table was delayed...eventually it arrived after 8 weeks!! Well itno June at this point (and i had purchased in March). When it arrived it was brown -- not black! I called them and they were like "Oh..." they had not verified the item before delivery. It took another 4 weeks (and me calling and demanding that the table be changed) before i finally got the right set...
I don't think the delay bothered me so much as the somewhat high prices and the lack of associated service. They have a great unique and stylish selection, but they lack on delivery and friendly on-going service after the purchase and through delivery.
I recommend window shopping at HP, but if you can, purchase your items through another retailer -- as they may have better prices, quicker delivery and good service.

In our house, you will find a futon sofa-bed, a queen-sized bed, a chair, a coffee-table, several lamps, picture frames and a hutch, all purchased from Comfort by Akiko. We like to buy locally when we can, and Akiko’s boutique offers all sorts of items that enhance our home. Over the years, we have become friends with Akiko, much as one might be able to do so in a smaller town than Seattle. While parking is always an issue in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, there is a 30 minute load zone in front of the store that opens up regularly.

Sephora is a fantastic store for every kind of bath and body product you could imagine. They have so many brands and an enormous selection of all things makeup, fragrance, lotion, and shower products. Dior, Bliss, and Stila are just a few of the excellent brands they carry. This store is so much better than chain bath stores. A great way to while away the hours when you're in Downtown Seattle.
