So i really enjoy good coffee and I was first drawn to Victrola because I had read about this new espresso machine company, Synesso, based in seattle and Victrola was one of the first cafes to install Synesso's 'uber' espresso machines (www.synesso.com/)
my first experience was so-so....yes the coffee was great...but it was more the experience that I just didn't jive with. The cashier and barista seemed a bit pretentious and rude......and it took a good 5 minutes to get my espresso....yes there were 5-6 people in front of me....but it seemed very odd indeed.
but i figured i'd give it another try and i've been back 4-5 times, but it's always the same experience......which is unfortunate as the coffee is great......but there are lots of great coffee shops and roasters in seattle.....that offer a much better experience.
on one instance i was ordering a sandwich and the cashier/barista had a pissed off attitude that they had to grill the sandwich.....and then when he delivered it......it was the wrong one.....so he was even more pissed........at what i have no idea, but it's unfortunate that i've had this same type of experience on several occasions.
So, if i'm on 15th and have 15 min to kill...i might hit Victrola or head down to Ladro (which usually has very nice baristas and great coffee as well)......or I find myself many times willing to walk on down to 19th and hit FUEL which is about as non-pretentious as you can get and has great coffee.
but if you're in the mood for some pretentiousness...then you know exactly where to head.
andiamo!

Praise allah that we now have a qualified alternative to the evil green machine (not that there aren't some fine local roasteries and all) - but peet's is the gear - great flavor and complexity, and not evil to boot. If you drink coffee and want to be on the side of truth and justice, get it here.

Starbucks is the Wal-Mart/McDonalds of coffee establishments without the low prices. They have homogenized and upsized the coffee industry to such astounding and disappointing proportions I am embarassed to know this culinary disservice blanketing the world (though thankfully not in Italy) originated in my home town. I'm sure the forebears of coffee culture would have blanched at the notion of "Super Big Gulp" lattes and Frappa-whatevers. Starbucks has actually made it possible to increase your girth by drinking coffee. A true feat.
My own soap box aside, the coffee is over-roasted, producing a bitter and subpar brew, hands down. I'd hit up Vivace or Torrefazione or a even a good cup of tea before I ever set foot in a Starbucks, no matter where I am, anywhere in the world.

Herkimer Coffee is the kind of place you want to spend your money at because the owners work hard to make it a good experience for you. The coffee is excellent (and I love the "art of the pour"), the pastries tasty and the donuts are Top Pot. Wireless internet and a changing array of interesting art on the walls top it all off.

This is where I first experienced a REALLY GOOD AMERICANO. Seriously. I never *liked* coffee up till then, it was more out of necessity. The fact that this is the cheapest good coffee in Seattle (only 1.50 for a double and 1.75 with flavoring) definitely helped my impression of this cute Upper Fremont roaster.
Lighthouse is where you go if you want a really good cup of coffee. Bottom line.
I agree with the other reviews: barista's are nice and efficient, atmosphere is average...not cozy...super hot on summer days (or when the roaster is going), not suggested for meetings or dates, relatively clean.
Easy parking though, almost like a drive-thru, stop in and roll on with your day...

Considering the plethora of great coffee joints in Seattle, this place is one to avoid. The coffee is mediocre at best, the crowds are huge (even on weekdays), and the wi-fi connectivity is very spotty. I live blocks away from Zoka's but choose to walk elsewhere because of these issues. Good luck finding an empty table, let alone an outlet for your laptop.

Okay, so I don't know about the coffee (no one I know drinks it). But I went here to meet a friend, just to see what it was like and it was SAD. The place is too big (not a lot of people in there very often) and the chairs were shredded (this just looks bad in a corporate place) and my chai was CRAP. I even asked for more syrup and it still sucked. The employees were sullen and I couldn't wait to leave. There might be other Tully's that are better, but this one should cut its losses.

Nice little neighborhood pastry shop. My favorite when it's in season is their fresh plum danish...overall, my recommendations for getting the most out of Besalu is to focus on a savory quiche and eat it there, and grab a few pasteries to enjoy the rest of the day/weekend. They have some tables and chairs out on the sidewalk that are ideal for you and your dog to sit, eat, and people watch!
