You'd think I'd be a regular at a coffee shop/bakery/sandwich shop just a block from my house. i used to be, but then their signs and general attitude got too un-neighborly for me. the sign on the front door says something like:
"Stop! no public restrooms. water for customers only. no outside food. no riff raff."
no riff raff? that's exactly how i'd describe myself on most sunday mornings...
The previous owners welcomed bicyclists in for a glass of water knowing they would most likely buy gatorade and a muffin.
inside signs include this gracious gem:
"magazines are for the enjoyment of everyone. people caught stealing magazines will be shot"
p.s. (for the offended co-owner) politics aside, the coffee is good, the muffins are great, the sandwiches are great, the pasta salad is forgettable, the service is variable, the attitude is defensive and unwelcoming. considering there is a coffee shop on nearly every corner, i'd pass up this one for a place with more grace. all stores on capitol hill have to deal with riff raff and the like- i wish cafe europa would find a kinder way.

I used this caterer for a brunch and had a fantastic experience. The presentation was tasteful, the price reasonable, the delivery timely, the food hot--and best of all, delicious! Though the brunch was only for 16, they did an exceptional job creating a unique menu and making it special.

I went to Whole Foods for lunch today, thinking I would induct myself into the cool kids' club of delicious, healthy, and earth-friendly lunchtime options, but I left feeling pretty ehhhh about the whole place. First of all, I selected a smallish tub of soup and shared a bit of pasta and a roll with a friend, and somehow still ended up spending $7 just on myself. Then, expecting great things from both the pasta and the soup, I soon realized that neither were as tasty as I'd expected. Perhaps I chose the store's only gross soup and pasta options, but I wish I'd skipped Whole Food's cream of asparagus and just gone to Nana's instead.

More
The Dome Room is located in the Arctic Building, downtown, on the corner or 3rd and Cherry. It is a banquet room that can handle over 200 people and has an antique glass domed ceiling that lights up. The dome is the highlight of the room and provides an art deco like, classy, ambiance. I had my wedding there, and with the dance floor in the middle of the room under the dome and all the tables surrounding it, you can't help but have a great time. There is also an attached area with large windows at one end that has room for buffet and extra dinner tables and a bar. I?ve looked at many different types of banquet type rooms and this one is in the low to mid price range. Arrangements are made with Tony's Catering, and you can use them as a caterer for your event or not. It gets a little pricey if you don't go with them (lots of add on charges). We chose to use them and really liked the food. Another plus is that you bring your own alcohol, which is a HUGE savings over many banquet/catering/hotel options. The feel of the room is what makes this such a great spot for weddings, parties, or banquets. I highly recommend it!

We went to The Woodland Park Zoo as part of a Citypass package when we were in Seattle last October. The zoo is in a residential and busy area of Seattle and has lots of traffic around it. When you get to the zoo, you have to pay to park, but I guess thats normal in Seattle. The zoo is a good size and you can get kinda lost in it. The animals that we saw were normal zoo animals and my son loved them all. One of my favorites was the Red Panda. It was so cute and small. I probably took about 15 pictures of this. We also loved the Jaguar. It was behind this big glass thing and would come right next to the window. I cant believe how big and how totally beautiful these animals are. We went to the concession stand to get food and the prices were totally outrageous. The food also was not very good. The area you ate in wasn't very clean and that whole experience kinda grossed me out. Overall, we enjoyed the park but were a little disappointed, We had heard this was an amazing zoo and I guess it was kinda a let down. I am glad that we went thoe:)

If you are like me then the chore of making dinner after a long day at work is always a pain. You have the option of eating out or you can go to the store and pick up ingredients for a fresh cooked meal. The first alternative while quick leaves you searching your pockets at the end wondering why you just spent $10 on a meal that will clog your arteries. The other is a healthier choice, but can also be expensive and time consuming. Usually by the time I'm done shopping and cooking, it is time to go to bed already. How can I get a decent meal that tastes home cooked, but doesn't cost much and take up all my time? I have found a great alternative one day when I visited a Dinner's Ready store in Lake Forest Park. This place is based off of the hot new concept of ordering meals online, going to a location, and then spending a couple of hours to make your meals and take them home. It was quick, easy, and when the price was broken down it actually ended up being extremely cheap too. They offered a delicious rotation of 16 different meals a month in which you choose either 6 or 12. Some of the menu items included calzones, Greek flank steak, and barbecue bourbon pulled pork. Definitely worth trying out, I hear they have locations elsewhere too.

More
While it is true that the views from the Skansonia are lovely, I was less than impressed by the venue when attending a recent wedding. The seating area was small (there were perhaps 100 or 150 guests, about 50 of which were standing) and the food was less than stellar. The DJ was too cheesy to be believed, and the bartenders were less than competent (I asked for club soda and got tonic water on one occasion). All in all, the money you'd spend here (something like $42 per guest, with a minimum of 100 guests?) would be better spent elsewhere.

Kathy Casey is a local star: she's created the drink menu for Earth and Ocean and other local spots, publishes books, teaches classes and generally gets around.
I love to stop by Dish D'lish and get a few things for a fun cocktail party with a bit of panache. Don't miss the almond encrusted baby Brie with apple chutney and you must have something that will go with the sour cherry ginger chutney.
The food is distinctive and elegant yet fun and delicious.
And pick up a few mixers while you're at it.
