Unless you are a serious cyclist and look the part you won't get any help. This is one of the snobbiest stores in Seattle. Recycled Cycles rarely has used bikes anymore and its rarer that you'll find anything at the entry-level price. If you want a good deal on a bike go to Bike Works in Columbia City. They are super helpful, have a selections, and are a non-profit -your purchase helps their youth program. Its probably what Recycled Cycles used to be like, before they got too cool.

I just bought my new bike at Gregg's and wanted to have some parts changed. They were totally unmotivated to sell me the extra parts. After a week I called them and asked about the status. Guess what, they did not even ordered the stuff. I am very disappointed...
It is also very hard to get a qualified sales person. They are talking about things they have no idea about.
Just try the stuff there, but don't buy. I will be hard for you getting someone helping you after you finished your shopping. Unfortunately I bought some extra labor and wanted to pimp my bike a bit - very bad idea with the Gregg's guys.

It’s really unfortunate that this place is so close to where I live because it’s not a very nice shop. There’s not a good selection of anything and their prices are so-so. But the worst is the service. Everyone seems rude and sort of suspicious of you. There does not seem to be a smile in there for you.

I have been an REI member for years now and can still remember fondly the bargain basement at the old Capitol Hill store but bargains are few and far between these days. My main objection to REI is how overpriced it seems most items are. Even with the 1% to 10% you get back at the end of the year it is still so much more expensive then other smaller local stores. I will give them props on the knowledge base on some things but in overall I have been a little let down. I will definitely say that if you can't find something elsewhere more then likely they will have it but you'll pay. Honestly every year i cash out my REI refund and spend the cash on gear up the street where i can get a little more for my money.

I tried to buy a bike there with some customization. They are good at promises, I paid in advance, but a week passed - job is not done (as it was promised) and in addition they tried to charge extra for things, which were included in the price I already paid.
As result lots of wasted time and no bike :(

You get a lot of macho attitude i think just about any bike shop you walk into, but as far at these guys go, it's pretty tolerable and somerimes even downright friendly. i even saw a female mechanic working there once. Also one time they attached a light wrong to the back of my rack and when it got all mangled in my wheel, they replaced it free. nice. they have a good newsletter too, with coupons and info about products and classes that they offer.

More
The Seattle flagship store for REI in Seattle has almost anything an outdoors person could want. The camping section is very big and even carries a selection of freeze dried organic food. The ski section, while pricey has a decent selection. Kayaks and bikes are also covered here. The basement holds a rental and repair shop. Upstairs is a wide selection of clothes and shoes for almost any activity. If you become a member at REI you will receive dividends each year on items that you purchase. REI can be expensive but they have great sales throughout the year including a member only sale that is truly outstanding.

I picked up my Specialized mountain bike from them and they're the best with pricing. I look everywhere else and they were cheaper by at least $100 dollars. They also do price match if it's cheaper else where, but that's very rare since they have the best prices. There service is great, I had my sprocket checked out, and they replaced it for free. You also get a free tuneup when you buy a bike. They are very professional and have been in the business for a long time. They will recommend the best places for begginers and advanced riders. They have a great line of bikes and optional equipment is very cheap!
Check them out, they have several locations across seattle.

If you don't like the prices now, you'll like them later. They'll love the clearance prices as they are sometimes more than half off. They know alot about the outdoors and will find you what you need to make a trip possible. Without them, I don't know where I would buy my gear. They have good locations an have great sales. Their 100% satisfaction guarantee is unbeatable.

Big bicycle stores what to move inventory off their sales floor even if means selling one that doesn't really fit the rider all that well. If you're going to spend a lot of time on your bike it *must* fit correctly. Il Vecchio is a small, custom shop. You'll spend more money but you'll end up with a bike that is made exactly to your unique specifications.
