There are lots of reasons why you might not want to go get a haircut at a training salon. Primarily, you are paying to be their lab rat while they learn what it's like to style a real person's hair. Depending on how complex of a job you want them to do, lots of things can go wrong.
That said, things very, very rarely seem to go amiss at this school. And hey, worse case, you'll end up bald for a few months, and then have the opportunity to try new and exciting hairstyles you'd probably never have tried otherwise. :)
But when I go, I just get a haircut, which is pretty hard to mess up. I've always been pretty happy, and it's hard to beat the $10 price.

I was about to give up on Supercuts until I came across Robert Shaffer at the University Ave location. It wasn't just that the haircuts I got were bad (they were), but they were always bad in a different way, so you couldn't even give specific instructions to try to correct for the problem. Anyway, Robert may not inspire confidence at first glance - he's pretty much bald himself - but he's a consummate professional - great results every time, plus he's a genuinely nice guy. If you want a great haircut and you live in north seattle, this is the place to go.

I am a college student, and I really like the haircut that Miss Cherry gives me. Cherry owns the salon and cuts hair herself. She is very friendly, and her price is very reasonable (I paid $11). Definitely recommended, Cherry knows her stuff.

More
I've not been to Scream, but my wife is a hair stylist who once worked at Rudy's Belltown. Just like any other salon, your cut depends on who does it. If you liked your barber the first time, you can request them the next time by calling in advance (though you still may have to wait: it's hard to reserve your barber because their clients are predominantly walk-ins). By looking at the styles of the staff, you'd think all they do is punk/rockabilly styles, but they're all trained stylists/barbers, so most can accommodate individual needs.
Here's the rub: they are trained for volume, hence the bad reviews. Some of these stylists are doing 20 cuts in six hours; the more cuts you do, the more tips you get, the more incentives and bennies the company gives you, etc. Rudy's also pushes the staff to move product, so, your barber is a commissioned salesperson, too.
I feel bad for the barbers (though, they can make good pay) but they are given no employer paid benefits (insurance, paid time off, etc.) until much later in their tenure, and have to work very intensively. Some of the more aggressive barbers would also hoard customers, making the atmosphere a bit of a customer quota competition - again, the more cuts, the more pay, etc.
My wife left there because, for someone who just enjoys doing hair and is focused on quality, the assembly line and salesperson approach doesn't work well for her.
I hope that explains a little from the Rudy's perspective.
And, yes, your cut with tip will be around $22.

"I recently had my first facial here with Anna, and my skin was relatively happy as a result, excepting the fact that they used a (gasp!) mineral oil-based cleanser (brand name Yon Ka Creme Cleanser) with a nasty petroleum scent that stuck to my skin for hours after the facial, giving me headaches. I did not smell the cleanser during the facial, only afterward -- the lingering, rubber-like odor kept wafting into my nose. I had to go home and wash it off.
On a positive note: the rest of the products they used (DerMed brand) were wonderful, the facial itself was relaxing and soothing, and my skin has been bright and clear all week. But when I called to let them know my thoughts about their cleanser, the owner would not give me a refund (I knew this was unlikely) or a discount on my next service, which would have been a really classy move, and would have helped to ensure that I returned despite my expensive, half-bad experience.
I would expect a place that tries to maintain such a high-end reputation to know better than to use mineral oil/petroleum based products at all, and am truly surprised they had not yet heard complaints about this. (Maybe we Seattle ladies don't know not to smear gasoline byproduct on our skin as moisturizer -- eeugh Vaseline). If you get a facial here, you won't be disappointed, but be sure to ask them for a different cleanser or write on your intake form that you do not want mineral oil based products used on you. Because the owner refused to do anything make up for my bad experience (come on, customer service!) I will not get another facial here. However, I will go back to Anna for Brazilians, as she does great work."

I went there once because it was so highly rated. What can I say: they ran 40 mins. late for my appointment (no apologies were made), the stylist was trying to do me and another woman at the same time - it took forever, the cut was nothing special, the atmosphere was intense (too precious, too stuck up, too focused on the beautiful people driving beautiful cars) and the price was ridculous - $270 for a cut and highlights and a 'glaze'. The cut was really not great, but it wasn't a disaster either. It just wasn't very much of anything (except, of course, expensive). And they pressured me to buy gel and other products (you know, showing them to you while you are in the chair with the apron on asking you which one you wanted...). The parking was difficult to find and expensive (not the salon's fault, of course). Plus, you have to fight traffic to get there. Skip it.
Pros: none really - just trendy but not really great
Cons: expensive and nothing special
Overall user rating: Not Recommended

it was with high hopes that i tried Salon Seven, but i ended up with a bad haircut.
i first saw jaclyn - very very nice lady! - who talked about what hairstyle would best suit my face, etc. she gave me a decent cut but after less than 2 weeks, it looked like it already needed to be recut - shaggy, etc. so i called the salon and asked to have someone else recut my hair. that's when things really went downhill.
when i told the receptionist that i wanted to make sure that whoever cut my hair was good with curly hair, she was dismissive and gave me the bitchy answer of "shelli HAS curly hair". ms. receptionist, a) that doesn't mean that someone *can* cut curly hair, and b) shelli has wavy hair, NOT curls. but i digress. shelli agreed with jacklyn's philosophy on what needed to be done with my hair and felt that the first cut was good, it just needed to be cut more. so i let her at it once we agreed that we'd keep the length (my long curls were doing a great job of sitting on my shoulders).
i don't even know where to go from here. my hair looked horrible the next day, almost like a mullet. but i know from experience that sometimes it takes a few days for the style to set in so i tried not to worry. my hair did improve but it's still an unnatractive cut. the top is somehow flat - no curl. but then lower down it curls so i look like i have a shelf on top of my head. the sides are ok in places but in other places they are more kinked than curly, and even straight in a few areas. in general it's quite shorter than what i wanted.
i hope others continue to have better luck.

I went to Wax On in Belltown for my first-ever Brazillian. I told the girl (Sandra? Sandy? She never told me her name, I had to call back later to ask and have since forgotten) it was my first time and that I was pretty freaked out about it. She never responded to that, never offered me anything to drink, barely said more than a couple woi\rds to me the entire time. She seemed to be in a hurry even though I was early. She made me wait for 20 minutes and never told me why I was sitting there for so long or when I was going to actually get my wax. The "spa" was very stark, not relaxing at all. The actual waxing room had terribly bright, sterile overhead lighting and blinding white walls. It felt way more like an operating room than a spa, which did not help me be any less freaked out. The girl did not use any powder before waxing (which I have since found out is not so great for the skin), nor did she put any powder or oil or lotion (nothing) on my skin when she was finished. She missed several spots and did not look over when she was finished to make sure she'd gotten everything. When I was leaving, she did not try to sell me anything (which was bad in my case since she neglected to use oil or lotion and it caused a horrible skin reaction). She did not tell me how to take care of it. I left shaking and nearly in tears. My skin reacted terribly...I broke out and it took over a month to clear, and I also had tons of ingrowns. I was so traumatized by the experience I will never go back to Wax On, and it took me 6 months to feel comfortable enough to go to a different spa (Habitude, with my trusted eyebrow waxer Sonya) for a Brazillian. I will never go anywhere but where Sonya works again, no matter the cost. Stay away from Wax On, they are horrible.
