although i haven't been there myself yet (i plan to go this weekend to find some cool kitchen counters), the re-store sounds like just what your sweet husband is looking for. they are a non-profit that aims to recycle high quality building materials.

it's a BIG store (more like a 3 story warehouse) stacked high with 'antique' or high-end flea market finds. go with a goal - otherwise you may get overwhelmed - but if you know what you want you're likely to find it for much less $ than you'd pay anywhere else (except the Fremont flea market which is also great). for example, we found a good looking, sturdy, unique (and i don't mean weird - it's cool looking) coffee table for not much. it was the first store we visited and there it was - just what we wanted. a must for antique store and flea market fans, and those tired of places like ikea.

The senior center on California Street in West Seattle has a thrift store where you can shop. It's pretty cheap, and sometimes they have half-off sales too. It's not my favorite thrift store, but if you can find something you're interested in here, you can usually get it at a good price.

More
From what I've heard, other antique dealers will visit this place on Tuesdays (after the weekend buying trips) to find things to sell at a much higher price at their stores.
What you'll find here is about a quarter junky contemporary stuff, half vintage furniture that needs some TLC but is very reasonably priced and about a quarter "better" antiques.
If you find something you love, they'll delivery it for a small fee and they're always pleasant to work with.

More
With modern furniture design at an affordable price and a hip location to boot, Area 51 has found its niche. Its market consists of those who have moved on from IKEA and want products that are a little more distinctive, but who aren't willing to pay high-end prices. One can find new and used products here, ranging from Dwell bedding to the occasional Eero Aarnio Ball Chair as well as modern sofas, tables and rugs.
However, where Area 51 provides in product selection, it takes away in service. This change has happened recently because when it first opened, the service was outstanding. Two years ago, I purchased a chair from this store and got a great deal on it, as the owner knocked the price down significantly because the product had a negligible defect. Naturally, this kind of situation promotes repeat business.
Yet, subsequent trips to Area 51 have proved its service completely inadequate. Last time I visited the store, which was about a month ago, I was looking for a specific type of bookcase. The employee was extremely unhelpful and would not even come up with alternative ideas on where I could find something similar; he just said, "We don't carry anything like that", and turned around. That's deplorable and it's why I'll be taking my business elsewhere.
Unfortunately, the lack of options in this market make Area 51 just about the only place to go for affordable, non-mass produced design in Seattle. If anyone wants a money making idea, open a store similar to Area 51 and provide better service, which isn't hard to do.

I don't want to post a full-blown review because I'm not 100% sure this is the place, but it's located a stones throw south of the "nexus". We've bought random junk here. Occasionally you can find a bargain depending on the seller (it works like a consignment shop, I think). Anyway, I'd check it out just because of the random selection of items. There is fairly decent selection from different eras and the stuff isn't so outlandish you can't afford it.

Deluxe junk is a very fun place to wander around in for awhile. It's rather cluttered, but that's what you expect from a place called Deluxe junk! They have some great vintage stuff, but some of their items are just a little overpriced. Sometimes they have good deals on older furniture though. I think there are many other shops in seattle that are better than this place, but that doesn't mean it's not worth going in there to check it out!

More
Golden Age Collectables offers an amazing depth and breadth of selection in the area of pen-and-paper RPGs, D&D manuals, comics, sci-fi/fantasy interests, and more. It's easy to spend an hour browsing the selections of models, books, and comics, as well as drop quite a bit of money here on the hard to find.
The location inside Pike Place is both a positive and a negative--coming here can easily become a day trip with all the other stores in the Market to explore, but it also makes parking a sometimes frustrating challenge. If you're in downtown Seattle, Golden Age is well worth stopping by.
