I was recently enjoying a leisurely Saturday morning with a friend, catching-up over steamy cups of espresso at
Victor's Celtic Coffee Co in downtown Redmond. Our pleasant morning ended abruptly when we were informed by the owner that they "needed our table (because) there are customers waiting". Apparently 2 cups of coffee at $3.50 per cup only buys you one hour of table time at Victor's. Sure, the coffee house was busy. But my expectations in visiting a coffee house is to be able to sit, relax, enjoy my cup of coffee, visit with friends or enjoy my
book or newspaper, and enjoy the aroma of the espresso. I am a supporter of individual coffee houses and
restaurants. I love the individuality and "small town feel" and had frequently recommended Victor's coffee house
to friends and co-workers. It saddens me that I will now be rescinding those recommendations and going elsewhere
for my coffee dates.

I went to Jerzy's resturaunt at a recommendation of a waitress who had previously worked there. Apparently everyone else burns their coffee (not being a coffee man, I just figured I could get a good cup of coffee without walking into a Starbucks).
I ordered a medium drink and about 20 minutes later the barrista lets me know they don't have enough coffee to make it so I got a cup half-filled with the dregs of their supply. Apparently the heater had also been off because I've been served soda warmer than the coffee I received.
While I plan on trying it again, maybe on a better day, this kind of service makes me wonder why I should even bother.

It is unfortunate that these bagels do not come with a health warning label. They contain unhealthy preservatives and refined sugar. For the health conscious, the Seattle bagels that Puget Consumer Coop sells are the best choice. Why support a business like Blazing Bagels who doesn't care about the health of his customers.

We had some very specific ideas for what we were going to spend money on when we got married--photography, clothing, and cake. We felt these three things were the most important and when our special day was over, they would mean the most.
We went to Mike's because they had a reputation for beautiful work with great flavor, and they didn't let us down. We wanted a cake that basically matched our wedding invitation, a relatively complex image of a man reaching up to his bride, who was resting against a crescent moon. Mike's put together several concept pictures for us, and also constructed a customized cake topper that matched our invitation bride and groom. The colors on the cake--mainly white with a deep blue and silver ribbons--matched perfectly as well. And even when we cut through the fondant into the cake itself, it was a soft, complex slive of heaven. Beautiful to look at and to eat! You can't go wrong!

This is japaneese bakery. Their cakes are awsome. Not like the regular american cake. Less sweet and and tasty cakes. Their fruit cakes are very tasty. The price is very high. But for a tasty cake you have to compromise. Their roll cakes and cheese cakes are also very good.

I love this bread company! If you want a sample, they are way too generous - they give you this SLAB of bread to sample. I'm satsfied wtih a tiny piece, I usually end up buying 2 loaves, and maybe a cinnamon roll. The bread smells great, tastes fresh, and makes good toast. They have info at the stores to tell you the ingredients of the breads too. I wish there were a few more around western washington tho!

I decided to review a few of my local favorite places to dine -- especially food for people from out of town. I grew up eating British food for while, and The British Pantry has some decent food if you're from Great Britain that will make you homesick. You can buy rather authentic bangers as well as any number of sweets, pastries, sausage rolls, etc... there. They have more than food too, so you may be pleasantly surprised in what you may find. They even carry some of that infamous Scottish delight, haggis! I never grew a taste for that! This is the only place that I have found locally that makes authentic fish and chips as well -- it's at their restaurant, Neville's, that's attached. You may have seen their sign on the sidewalk -- why did you drive past it? Of course, you get much more than that -- stop in get some beef wellington or bangers and mash. How about some afternoon tea with cucumber sandwiches and scones? If you're tired of going to that same old restaurant locally, try something new! You may end up sipping some tea during your late "lunch" break someday!

I go to Hancock's Bakery when I need breakfast treats for home or work. They have a small bakery counter but it is home to some delicious goodies. I particularly like the "roll ups" pastries. They also have good turnovers in flavors like cherry or apple. You can get a good sized box of treats for around $5. Also, they usually have a coupon in the Entertainment Book that I like to use. Their cakes are custom made and quite tasty as well. You can get your espresso there in the morning, or a smoothie. They are conveniently located across from the post office on NE 85th Street. Give them a try.
