Unless you are staying here using your Hilton Points, I had rather you find a better place to stay. The hotel is just ok with not much view (well ok they have better views but the room we got had average!!!) For the price that we got charged and for what we got in Marriott, I had pick Marriott any day. For the same price we got Ocean View and free buffet breakfast where they have fresh fruit, Freshly made to order eggs, Fresh Juice among other things.
I had rather stay away from this one with outdated design...unless of course you are using your points or they change their outlook

This is a less expensive motel in the area, but offers a lot of amenities for the price. The rooms need some updating and are showing some signs of wear, but the bathroom featured marble tile and a jetted tub. The walls are a little thin (but we also were in a room that was an adjoining one with the one next door). Each room has a mini fridge and microwave and coffee maker. They have an indoor pool and spa that they keep heated to a nice temperature. They feature an expanded continental breakfast that includes hot Belgian waffles, cold cereal, bagels, fruit, orange juice, milk, hot cocoa, toast, and more! This is just down the street from a shopping mall and California Pizza Kitchen. You’re too far to walk to Cannery Row or the aquarium if you stay here.

Stayed at the Travelodge in Monterey, CA for one night recently. The reviews I'd read on tripadvisor where pretty decent. Spacious, free wifi etc. At $55 dollars/night it was a reasonable deal. When I checked in, though, the room was not spacious AT ALL. The bathroom floor was tinged yellow. I kept my shoes on the whole time! There was also a 'smell' in the room, a slightly sour smell I bought a candle on cannery row to burn in the room an it helped somewhat. The only 'pro' was the free wifi, that ended up being very convenient.

We recently made a trip to Monterey, to do the usual fun stuff- see the Monterey Bay Aquarium, whale watch shop etc. For our jumping off point we stayed at the Best Western Beach Resort.
Let me start off by saying that this is the only hotel with beachfront property. On that side of the hotel, the view is gorgeous. If you love the beach, like I do, it is worth the extra money to stay on that side. When I booked the room online, I was dubious of the view, and opted for a non-view room. I was pleasantly given an upgrade upon my arrival. I could not tell you why, as I did not ask for it. I did not have to pay the extra premium for the room. Having never had stayed at a Best Western before, I was quite pleased.
The lobby is very nicely decorated. If I had to give it a style I would call it kind of a Spanish- casual California style. Handsome chairs with dark wood, tile floors, and a magnificent view of the beach. Since the lobby is on the second level, it is possible to sit next to the fireplace and see the beautiful surf ebb and flow on the beach. Here you can also have evening beverages. Staff is pleasant and eager to help make your stay a memorable one.
The room we stayed in was on the first floor, facing the beach. The neat thing about this room, is that there are wooden platforms built in front of the rooms, interspersed with sand and sand-loving plants. There is a necessary retaining wall between the beach and the platforms. I would imagine these are here to save you from some large waves, which no doubt can appear at your doorstep in large storms. The hotel is also next to a public beach, which is kind of fun. Since we visited in the spring, there was no one in the water that was not screaming. The Pacific is way too cold even for casual wading. With an air temperature of 52 F, you can see why it would be a bad idea. However, in the warmer times, this may be a nice place to paddle around. At night, it is possible to get firewood from the hotel, and dig a nice fire-pit to enjoy the waves by. Several fires were present the first night of our stay.
The room itself was a basic room, 2 queen beds. There was a small table and a decent sized tv. The bathroom was composed of an open shower bay and a toilet. The sinks were outside the door. I found that to be a little crowded, but I do not generally hangout in the bathroom enough to make that an issue. There was a small fridge, coffee pot and hair dryer. The best part was the toiletries- generally I could care less, as I bring my own, but the hotel uses the Proterra line, which I find to be particularly fragrant. I loved it.
The beds were comfy, pillows perky and best of all, the bed featured giant feather comforters. I left the small window open all night, just so I could relish the chilly morning under that comforter. ( By the way, this small window being open should be explained-it isn’t a window you can see through, but a small vented opening below the big glass window- this way you can sleep securely with it open, and hear the waves crashing all night long.)
Overall- service was great, price was reasonable and I slept like a baby! We will make this our new Monterey digs.

Monterey Whale Watching has two cruises a day; one in the morning and one in the early afternoon. Their boat is very nice and big (compared to the otehr whale watching boats I saw at the wharf). The cruise takes between 2 and 3 hours. They take out into the bay. They have loud speakers outside and inside. A marine biologist narrates the whole time. It can sometimes be hard to hear because the noise of the engine and the waves cover up the speaker's voice. Then they stop the engine for a while when the boat is in close proximity to the whales. It is a great trip to take when in Monterey.

A Monterey Hotel that's close to everything that matters

More
When you visit Monterey, you probably have a certain list of places to visit and things to try. Monterey Bay Aquarium is probably on that list, as well as Monterey Fisherman's Wharf, followed by downtown. Monterey Hotel is conveniently located within walking distance from all the places of interest in Monterey, and since it's right downtown, getting a cup of coffee in the morning or having a quick bite generally means crossing the street.
The hotel is historic, having been built in 1904. However, it has very nice interior, and none of the weird smells or unsanitary conditions you'd expect from old buildings. The staff is quite friendly and helpful the newcomers to Monterey to figure out their way around. The hotel lobby contains the list of all the takeout menus available in Monterey (not that you'd want a pizza delivery, having come to the seafood capital of NorCal).
The cons of being a historic hotel include the lack of elevators (not a problem for most of the people in the 3-story building) and horrendously squeaky floors. We were on the 2nd floor, and were going to bed early, due to overdose of walks on the fresh air, and I swear they held the walking competition the floor above. The room was also smaller than what you'd expect to get for similar money at a chain hotel.
There's continental breakfast served downstairs every morning 7-10 am, which includes bagels, yoghurt, cereal and a selection of fresh fruit. The hotel is within 20-30 minute walk from Monterey Bay Aquarium, and it's definitely a very nice walk on the trail by the ocean. It's realtively easy to get to from the highway.
There's no onsite parking, an the valet parking at the hotel is $16 a day. We were there for the Memorial Day weekend, and the downtown streets and parking lots are open to the public for free on weekends and holidays, so we managed to get a spot on the street right outside the hotel. If you positively cannot find any parking in the street, drive to the very end of Alvarado, and right behind the Washington Mutual building there's a public parking garage.
Hotel's advertised WiFi hotspot was not secured, but did not want to associate with my laptop even at 100% signal strength. I got Internet for maybe 10 minutes (which was manifested by all instant messengers popping windows like crazy and Yahoo! Messenger making those gun sounds notifying me of new mail) and could not get online after that, even though the wireless connection displayed 100% quality all along, which makes me think it wasn't my laptop that was the problem.

My husband took me here for my birthday last year, which was a nice surprise. Parking is convenient, no charge. The outside plaza and indoor lobby is really nice, clean, inviting.
Our room was great! The bed was extremely comfortable and had so many pillows! The decor was awesome, very modern and cheerful! Each room comes with a private balcony. Very nice!
We were there during the holidays, so there were a lot of events going on on the Saturday night we stayed. There was an office party and a high school dance in different ballrooms. During the middle of the night, you could hear the people running up and down the halls. But everything else was great.
Nice place to stay, I'd definitely recommend this hotel!
