This restaurant is a sister restaurant to The Fish Hopper (read my review of The Fish Hopper here: http://www.judysbook.com/members/13223/posts/2006/10/476403/ ) and is locally owned and operated. They also feature award winning clam chowder here, which is what we ordered for a yummy lunch a la bread bowl (try their free sample while you walk down Fisherman’s Wharf). They are also open for dinner. Of course the fresh seafood is their specialty, but they also have pasta and steak if you’re a bit tired of the sea fare. Seats by the window have views of harbor seals, sea otters, and sea birds during the day. Score some coupons for a free appetizer by visiting the Convention & Visitors Bureau (adjacent to the Wharf area) before your meal.

Excellent Japanese Food!

Sapporo's restaurant is a great place to enjoy fresh, cooked in front of your eyes Japanese food. The lunch specials are an especially great meal. This is one of those places where you sit at a table around a grill and the chef cooks your orders in front of you. Be prepared for the big burst of flames at the start! The chef puts on an enjoyable show while cooking up your delicious food. At lunchtime it tends to be a bit quieter, but things can get pretty loud come dinner time! This is a great place to go with friends or to take a small office out to lunch to celebrate a birthday. Oh, and speaking of birthdays...for $7.50, they will sing, play the drums, take a commemorative photo of your group, serve a fruit dessert and give the birthday person a set of very fancy chopsticks (5 pairs included) and chopstick holders.

Unless you are staying here using your Hilton Points, I had rather you find a better place to stay. The hotel is just ok with not much view (well ok they have better views but the room we got had average!!!) For the price that we got charged and for what we got in Marriott, I had pick Marriott any day. For the same price we got Ocean View and free buffet breakfast where they have fresh fruit, Freshly made to order eggs, Fresh Juice among other things.
I had rather stay away from this one with outdated design...unless of course you are using your points or they change their outlook

Our first meal in Monterey, CA was at the Fish Hopper. Amazing view of the Monterey Bay and the Fisherman's Warf. Great food. Great atmosphere. Heat lamps (a must due to the cool climate). The prices were a bit high. Definitely touristy pricing.

This place has some of the best seafood ever. I personally prefer their Bucket of Trash which has an assortment of cajun and garlic flavored seafood. All of the waiters and waitresses share tables, so you are free to ask any waiter for anything or you can flip the sign on the table that say "Stop Forest Stop!" and a waiter will come to your table in seconds. The wait to get into this place is fairly long on the weekends and at night, averaging around 60 minutes everytime I have went. You can choose to eat outside on their patio section which has a wait time of only around 15 minutes because it is right by the ocean and sometimes it can get quite cold. Dishes average around $15 a plate.

Rosine's serves up the typical American-style fare you can find at most restaurants. The prices are reasonable, and the food is pretty good. But the real draw of this place is the cakes. Order a slice, but don't think you'll be able to finish it all on your own! From the moment you walk in, those cakes in the display case are just begging to be tasted...and you won't be disappointed! The slices are HUGE, enough for two or even three people to split. The flavors are a mix of classics like chocolate layer cake or German chocolate cake and candy flavors, such as Reese's peanut butter cup or Snickers. All are delicious, and you won't want to walk out without trying at least one! My advice: go for a salad or a half sandwich, and then split a slice of cake with a friend (or box up half the slice to enjoy the next day!).

It was very disappointing to hear from my parents, that what should've been a wonderful weekend spent with their grandchildren included a very unsatisfactory customer service on Gilbert's part. Our family has been coming to Gilberts for years, and for the past several years, my parents have done a weekend trip to Monterey with their grandchildren which included a stop at Gilberts. Without fail! However, my parents were very distraught that their server Erika, on Saturday Aug 25 '07 did not even bother to exert ANY kind of customer service to them. Who took their drinks? An apologetic busgirl. Who followed up on their order? No one. Who followed up if they had drinks? No one. And Erika had the audacity to tell my parents that it was a busy night? There is absolutely no reason for that excuse and it is even more appalling that their wait staff would even say that to the guests. I am hoping that Erika's unprofessional behavior does not put a cloud on Gilberts, however, based on a very poor experience that my parents encountered over the weekend, it will definitely be a note to remember when recommending places to eat at Monterey. As a customer, I would sincerely hope that the management would take an extra effort in educating their wait staff in regards to customer service. To say that we will not be having a meal at Gilberts again is definitely an understatement!

Renee's has some of the best food around downtown Monterey. French California Cuisine is awesome. However, when the staff hits on the guests with great gusto, it ruins the whole meal and experience. Add that several visits were interrupted by staff that had so obviously hit the tequila bottle a bit too hard you could smell it a mile away - I don't know how any cooking got done. Bad, bad, bad.
